  • “JoshYou gotta think Denver Broncos Josh McDaniels was second-guessing himself after his team got trashed 32-3 by the San Diego Chargers yesterday, particularly for one incident that supposedly occurred before the game even got started, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

When McDaniels was walking past the Chargers' linebackers before the game, he supposedly said, "We own you." And that didn't sit very well with the folks in San Diego, as you can imagine.

Outside linebacker Shaun Phillips(notes) told the paper, "I'm not surprised. He's a little cocky (rear end)... To say he owns us? I mean, you beat us one time. What has he really done in this league? He had a team 6-0 and now he's looking up at us from second place."

After the game, McDaniels had the response of a six-year-old when asked about the incident: "(They) talked to me first."

  • “GilbertThe Washington Wizards got pummeled Saturday night 106-84 against the San Antonio Spurs but the tongue-lashing two of the team's stars took afterward from each other was much worse, according to the Washington Post.

The Wizards have played 12 games together this season but it doesn't appear that the 3-9 squad is getting any closer. Instead, it seems the team is moving apart irreparably. Just after the game Brendan Haywood(notes) was saying ego was getting in the way of the Wizards winning any games.

And even though Gilbert Arenas(notes) has stopped blogging, it appears he has no problem still letting the world know his feelings. He took the blame as a leader: "The NBA's a ship. It's going to keep moving. Teams are not waiting for us," Arenas said. "As the captain, I've got to steer my ship. If I've got to steer it to land until everybody wants to jump on, then I'm going to do it. . . . And we'll see who comes and follows. If nobody wants to follow, then the boat's just going to keep moving."

As he was talking, Haywood reportedly walked by and started singing Beyoncé's "Ego."

It's not looking good for the Wizards this season.

  • “JohnnyEven though Johnny Damon(notes) wants to stay with the New York Yankees, he seems to be hurting his chances when he makes it public that he's not planning on taking any kind of pay cut from what he was just making, according to the New York Daily News.

The 36-year-old Damon is apparently thinking that he would like a three- or four-year deal and the Yankees supposedly only want to give him a two-year deal. The 2010 salary is still being finalized for the Yanks but it is believed that the team's priorities are to bring back Damon and Andy Pettitte(notes).

The Daily News reports that Damon told friends earlier this year that he would accept a shorter deal from the Yanks but then his annual salary would have to go up.

  • “BenBen Roethlisberger(notes) had his bell rung pretty loudly on Sunday when he suffered a concussion during the Pittsburgh Steelers' overtime loss against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The hit came from Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson who kneed him in the helmet but it's looking like Roethlisberger is recovering pretty well. According to ProFootballTalk, the quarterback was allowed to fly home with the team, remembers everything, and doesn't have any nauseau.

The Steelers take on a division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, next week and it's believed that Roethlisberger is likely to be back for the matchup.

He'll get medical tests today that will determine the true likelihood of that happening, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

  • “BenFormer All-Star Ben Sheets(notes) is apparently at the top of the list for the New York Mets this off-season even though he didn't pitch in the majors this year, according to the New York Post. While John Lackey(notes) is the guy the Mets somehow hope to get, the 31-year-old Sheets is a much more likely choice if the New York Daily News is to be believed.

The Daily News reports that the Mets only have $20 million to spend this off-season.

While the Mets are sure to reduce the $147 payroll it had last season, which would allow for more than $20 million to be spent on free agents, it is believed that there is no way the Mets can compete in the free-agent bidding wars that will take place for Lackey, Matt Holliday(notes), and Jason Bay(notes).

So Sheets and Jason Marquis(notes) are apparently the two pitchers that the team is focused on snagging

  • “EmekaHornets getting ready to deal some of its biggest names. With a 6-9 record, the team is pretty low in the standings so why not?

First it was reported that center Emeka Okafor(notes) was on the block and then another report came that pretty much the whole team was on the block except for Chris Paul(notes). Neither story was apparently true, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Team execs tell the paper that nobody on the team is getting moved right now. When the February trading deadline comes, things could be a lot different but the team apparently wants to stick with this group for a little bit and see what it can do.

  • “MikeBoston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell(notes) is apparently up on the trading block in an off-season that is crowded with third sackers, according to the FOXSports.

The word is that the Red Sox will pay half of the 35-year-old Lowell's $12 million salary next season to anybody who will take him.

Lowell hasn't played more than 120 games in the last two years so if anybody takes him, they better have a decent backup.

If the Sox can get Adrian Gonzalez(notes) from the San Diego Padres, he'll be playing first and Kevin Youkilis(notes) will be moved to third. Otherwise, Boston will be bidding for the likes of Adrian Beltre(notes), Placido Polanco(notes), Chone Figgins(notes), and a bunch of others, though Beltre is believed to be the one of most interest to the Sox.

  • “YorvitCatcher Yorvit Torrealba(notes) reportedly turned down a two-year, $4.5 million deal from his former club, the Colorado Rockies, and it now appears that the 31-year-old may be getting interest from a division rival, according to the Denver Post.

It isn't clear which one it is but the San Francisco Giants are the most likely team since it needs someone to hold the spot till top prospect Buster Posey(notes) is ready to fill it.

The Rockies have also supposedly given a call to the agent for Brian Schneider(notes) just in case Torrealba doesn't end up back in Denver.

  • “TomasThe Chichago Blackhawks apparently need to lsoe another $1.5 million from its roster in order to make room for the contract extensions that are supposedly about to be signed by Patrick Kane(notes), Jonathan Toews(notes) and defenseman Duncan Keith(notes). Rumor has it that the Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs have been talking extensively in the past few months and a deal could happen between the two, according to the Toronto Sun.

One guy who could come over from Chicago is defenseman Brent Sopel(notes), who Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke apparently liked when they wer together with the Vancouver Canucks. Sopel is getting paid $2.33 million and only getting about 14 minues of playing time a gam.

Part of the problem is that the Maple Leafs aren't quite sure of the value of some of its minor-league talent. Center Tyler Bozak(notes) is apparently just coming off having H1N1 and it's unclear if he can play at the top level or not.

Another rumor has veteran defenseman Tomas Kaberle(notes) getting moved even though he has a no-trade clause, but Kaberle isn't reportedly interested in going anywhere. "Where is this coming from?" he said. "I'm the wrong guy to be asking (about a trade)."

Burke says he hasn't asked Kaberle to waive his clause - yet.

    VW coming to NASCAR?

“BrianA few days ago, the head of Volkswagen's motor sports program was spotted trotting around Homestead-Miami Speedway and folks began jabbering about the idea that VW would be joining NASCAR, becoming the second foreign automaker after Toyota to do so, according to the Associated Press.

The word from "top NASCAR officials" was that the fella, Hans-Joachim Stuck, was meeting with NASCAR's sanctioning body. Brian France, NASCAR's chairman, said this year that NASCAR would be totally cool with having more manufacturers come on board as long as it has at least one production plant in the U.S. VW is building one right now in Tennessee and should get rolling in 2011.

But now the Speed Channel is saying that the meeting had nothing to do with bringing VW to NASCAR but it was all about three of its brands --VW, Audi, and Lamborghini - getting into Grand-Am Road Racing, which is owned and operated by NASCAR.
